VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE IRF FAMILY SHELTER The Congregation's annual service week for the IRF Family Shelter at St.Cecilia's Church in Englewood will be from Wednesday, April 11th to 13th.The congregation prepares dinner for the 5-8 families who are temporary residents at the Shelter. This is an important service that we have performed for many years. We need volunteers to cook or sleep over one night. All cooking is done at the shelter with a group of 5 or 6 volunteers. We arrive at 4pm, prepare the meal, serve and leave at around 6:30pm after clean-up. Two volunteers are needed each night to sleep over at the facility. Sleep-over volunteers can arrive at 8PM and leave the following morning at around 7am. All who have volunteered in the past think of this as one of the more meaningful services we perform as a congregation. For more information and to volunteer your services contact Steve Savitz or Kate Liebhold after service on Sunday. If you will not be at service you can volunteer by email to stevsavitz at aol.com. And, "swing" is the positive result of all that musical interplay. Lauren & her wondrous group of three veterans, (Tim Horner-drums, Rufus Reid-bass, & Allen Farnham on piano deliver a myriad of artistic polyphonic jewels joined to a panoply of reflection, color, & dynamics. As for Lauren, she is the embodiment of the aesthetic, deeper, philosophical side of the vocal idiom. Her passionate delivery is imbued with candor, structure, reflection, & lovely kaleidoscopic song patterns that are certainly easy to listen to. George W. UCP CANVASS DINNER Flat Rock Brook Nature Center Englewood, NJ Friday, April 20, 2007 6:30pm - 10:00pm Traditionally, the Canvass Dinner was a time when folks at UUCP came together to have a little food, tell a few jokes, have a little fun and raise a little money. NO MORE!!! We are planning for the biggest growth period in our Congregation's history. The 2007/08 period will be a breakout year for UUCP. We are planning to move from a small, tightly knit community of faith to an organization having a significant impact on the surrounding community. The world will soon know that at UUCP...... WE'RE STEPPING ON OUT (THE CANVASS DINNER'S THEME) In the coming weeks, you will learn more about the aggressive plans the Board will propose for your consideration. We intend to improve the community, in both the secular and spiritual areas. Pound for pound, UUCP has the highest concentration of talent, will -power, and experience of any Congregation in America. What we need now, is for everyone to support the new, expanded initiative with generous pledge donations. Pledging is the bedrock of any organization and will ultimately determine just how committed we are. We have to STEP OUT of the old way of thinking that assumes "small is beautiful". We have to STEP UP to the challenge of creating an environment in which new people will be encouraged by our deeds to join us. We must STEP IN the ring and take on the difficult problems facing our community as much as our size and interest allow. Congratulations!!! Hang On !!!! because......IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A MEMBER OF UUCP. ............................................................................................................................ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Online registration begins February 15 at www.uumetrony.org .................................................................................................................................. .................................................................................................................................. WHY DO WE PLEDGE? WE'RE STEPPIN' ON UP In the course of daily events, there are many tugs and pulls on our purse strings. Often we don't notice how much is spent on relatively minor things like movies, meals out, entertainment, and new clothes. Although we are not advocating a vow of poverty, it is interesting to note how much is spent on things that are temporary-compared with what is allocated toward our most important task on earth-our spiritual journey. Unfortunately, if we just allow this situation to proceed at its natural pace, it is unlikely that financial support for our spiritual growth would ever match what is allocated toward our material possessions. WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN? It's simple-we are not bombarded with message after message, reminding us to donate to the church, synagogue, or place of worship to the same extent as in the commercial world. In addition, we don't see beautiful images of the positive results that spring from spiritual organizations that are supported by our dollars. To counter this negative, materialistic imbalance, people of all faiths have developed one rule. Pay your spiritual obligation first. Make your pledge first! Whatever is left over, is for everything else. Why do we pledge? Because we care more about our spiritual journey than the latest movie, great meal, new clothes or new car. We need you to STEP UP to the challenge of making your financial support for UUCP to the greatest amount that your circumstance will allow. Think about how much is spent on temporary, frivolous activities, and try to match that amount with your pledge. Why do we pledge??? Because we care and accept the challenge of STEPPIN' ON UP in supporting UUCP to the maximum financial amount possible. .................................................................................................................................. READ ON ! ........................................................ UUCP RACIAL AND SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM NEWS ! (continued from page 1) *** Dear Friends, Happy spring! We hope you'll join us again for the fourth session in the Undoing Racism Committee's Friday Film Night Series. Refreshments will be served. We're very pleased that Dr. Larry Greene, Professor of African American History at Seton Hall, will be back to introduce Do the Right Thing and provide historical frameworks for our discussion and analysis. We also ask that you please save the date of Friday, June 15. Our series will culminate on this special evening with the work of local writer, director and producer Pete Chatmon. Mr. Chatmon will show and discuss his first feature-length film, Premium, which was presented at the Newark Black Film Festival last July and is now available on DVD (through Amazon and Netflix). This last session will be a fundraiser to support Mr. Chatmon's ongoing work (a donation will be suggested). As always, we appreciate your efforts to spread the word and look forward to seeing you on the 27th! Warm regards, Maggie & Ellen .................................................................................................................................. Action Alert In the wake of the latest racial slur broadcast on Don Imus' show, the question is not whether Imus is a racist-the man, after all, admitted to hiring one of his co-hosts to do "nigger jokes" (60 Minutes, 7/19/98)--but why CBS, NBC and top media pundits seem to feel no embarrassment over associating with his racism. The Imus in the Morning radio show is aired on CBS-owned radio station WFAN, and is syndicated nationally by CBS-owned Westwood One. It is simulcast daily on MSNBC, a cable news channel in which GE subsidiary NBC Universal holds a controlling interest. Top media pundits like Tim Russert, Howard Fineman, Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd are frequent Imus guests. The show has also been a conduit for televised racism and other bigotry for years. FAIR and others have documented numerous instances of Imus and his on-air colleagues expressing overt racism and other forms of bigotry. Imus himself has referred to African-American journalist Gwen Ifill as "a cleaning lady," to New York Times sports reporter Bill Rhoden as "quota hire" and to tennis player Amelie Mauresmo as "a big old lesbo." Imus called Washington Post reporter Howard Kurtz a "boner-nosed... beanie-wearing Jewboy," referred to a disabled colleague as "the cripple," and to an Indian men's tennis duo as "Gunga Din and Sambo." In Imus' words, the New York Knicks are "chest-thumping pimps." Imus' on again/off again sidekick Sid Rosenberg was temporarily fired in 2001 for calling tennis player Venus Williams an "animal" and remarking that the Williams sisters-Venus and her tennis player sister Serena-would more likely be featured in National Geographic than in Playboy. Rosenberg insisted to New ork's Daily News (6/7/01) that his comments weren't racist, "just zoological." In 2004, MSNBC had to apologize when the rehired Rosenberg referred to Palestinians as "stinking animals." In May 2005, MSNBC let Contessa Brewer out of her short stint as a news reader on Imus' morning show after Imus had made a daily game of crude personal attacks against her, calling her a pig, a skank, dumber than dirt and other similar felicities, all on air. MSNBC claimed they "expressed their displeasure" to the host (New York Post, 5/1/05), while noting that his "humor" was "often brilliant and provocative." In his most recent racist outburst, on April 4, Imus called the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos," just moments after sidekick and executive producer Bernard McGuirk (the "nigger jokes" hire) called them "hard-core hos." The Rutgers team, which recently played in the national championship finals, is made up of eight African-American women and two white women. On April 6, Imus issued an apology for the slur of the Rutgers team. It was the latest in a long line of apologies for bigotry on his show. Past apologies have served to take pressure off Imus, but haven't resulted in a change of behavior by the host or his colleagues. Niether has Imus' history of bigotry dissuaded prominent journalists and pundits, more after publicity than principle, from appearing on Imus' show. Friday's show, in addition to Imus' apology, featured an interview with NBC's Meet the Press host Tim Russert. In an exceptional report on April 9, New York Times reporter David Carr noted Imus' history of racism and the parade of media luminaries who have appeared on his show, who have rarely raised questions about the show's bigotry. Carr noted that, even in the aftermath of the latest Imus slurs, Newsweek editor Evan Thomas defended appearing on the show, explaining: "I am going on the show, though. I think if I didn't, it would be posturing. I have been going on the show for quite some time and he occasionally goes over the line." It's time for CBS and NBC to acknowledge that Imus is unlikely to ever rein in his bigotry, that the crude and hateful insults are a key part of his routine: Like the cowboy hat, they provide an air of "edginess" to what is often otherwise a dull exercise in Beltway insider back-scratching. A media company that chooses to run such a show has two choices: It can declare, explicitly or implicitly, that calling people "nappy-headed hos" and "beanie-wearing Jewboys" is an acceptable part of the national discussion. Or it can end its affiliation with said program. The Russerts, Finemans and the like who elect to appear on Imus' show have a similar decision: Are you down with "nigger jokes" or aren't you? ACTION: Contact Westwood One president Peter Kosann and MSNBC general manager Dan Abrams and ask whether, given the track record of empty apologies from Don Imus, their companies have any problems with the hateful slurs the talk host will predictably air in the near future. THE FINAL STEP! ! ! A question often asked is, how much should I pledge??? At UUCP, we welcome all interested individuals into our spiritual community without any monetary, pre-determined requirements. We are perfectly pleased to accept whatever your heart and circumstances allow. No exceptions. However, an organization cannot exist without substantial financial backing, and some idea of projected income levels, before we can intelligently plan for the future. The Board of Trustees is proposing an aggressive outreach program which must be supported with an aggressive financial base. We anticipate increasing membership significantly, which would ultimately spread the total financial commitment among more congregants and project us as a major player in spiritual and social justice affairs in the community . The general guideline, which has been accepted at UUCP, has been that 3% of ones income is an appropriate pledge goal. This compares favorably with churches in the Christian denominations that suggest a 10% pledge. Jewish communities vary widely depending on the current Deeds of the specific Synagogue. The recommended amount may exceed the 10% level. Some Evangelical denominatlons encourage members to will their homes to the church, in addition to a generous pledge. How much is enough??? You tell us. ready to Step out in Faith and take... The real question is, are you THE FINAL STEP It's a great time to be a member ofUUCP!!! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... IRF Family Shelter Community Service a Great Success >From April 11-14th our congregation volunteered at St .Cecelia's Family Shelter in Englewood, NJ. Twenty nine UUCP volunteers cooked great meals for the six families who are temporary residents of the shelter until they can find permanent housing. Our congregation rose to the occasion and collectively prepared wonderful tacos, chicken and fried fish with all the trimmings along with great desserts. Most of all we all helped others in our community in their time of need. Our congregation's generosity and warmth shined brightly. Nancy Woods the director of the Shelter thanked us personally for our consistency and for making her difficult job a bit easier. I would encourage sending your messages of support. This can be of great comfort to them as they go through this rough time. Jon ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Andrea Lerner Date: Apr 18, 2007 11:10 AM Subject: Flood Damage to First Unitarian Society of Westchester To: Andrea Lerner Cc: Calvin Dame , Laurie Golson Dear Friends, As a result of the heavy rains and storm of the last weekend, the First Unitarian Society of Westchester, in Hastings-on-Hudson suffered severe damage to their building. Last Sunday the parking lot filled with water and the police evacuated the building before the end of the second service. When church leaders were able to reenter the building on Tuesday they found the building flooded with more than a foot of water. The entire building is unusable for the near future and the congregation is in the process of assessing damage. A fuel tank overturned and immediate environmental clean-up has been necessary. The congregation is looking for worship, RE, meeting and administrative space. And, of course, is exploring insurance and disaster relief money. The congregation has also just experienced the death of longtime member and volunteer, Gil hart, making this a week of significant loss and mourning. The Metro District Program Executive Team, Andrea Lerner and Rev. CalvinDame, will be with the congregation at worship this coming Sunday. The District Trauma Response Team has been contacted and may have a presence on Sunday, as well. At this point, the full extent of the damage is yet to be discovered, the period of time without their own building is unclear, and the monetary costs and coverage are unknown. Words of encouragement are welcome, of course, and contributions would be most welcome, as well. The former church phone number is out of service, but 914-205-3370 is now in use. The mailing address remains the same: 2 Old Jackson Avenue, Hatings-on-Hudson, You may also contact Andrea or Calvin with concerns or questions. Rev. Calvin O. The emails that you receive from the congregation, such as the Weekly Reader, and this email, come from this list. Being a moderated list means that when you send something to post to the mailing list, it is read by a moderator who then either accepts or rejects the posting. The reason that we have a moderated list is to limit the postings to only official congregational business An example of this is that we recently had to reject a posting calling for the impeachment of President Bush. This message was rejected as a posting because in order to maintain our 501(c) nonprofit status as a religious organization under IRS regulations, we are prohibited from engaging in political activities. We are allowed to support causes, such as protesting the war, but the congregation cannot take a stand either for or against a particular political figure. If you have any questions about using the list or the list policy, please feel free to contact any one of the moderators. The current moderators are Tom Hart, Jon King and Michael Meyers-Jouan. -- Jonathan King 336 Murray Ave. Englewood, NJ 07631 Ph: 201-569-2238 Fax: 201-336-9127 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
