"Bringing Folks Together" The annual UUCP JAZZEvent is a significant part of the UUCP Racial & Social Justice Ministry. We view the Event as UUCP's cultural gift to the community within which UUCP resides. The JAZZ Event acknowledges, honors, and celebrates our nation's pivotal music, as well as its veteran composers, interpreters, and performers. Each year a veteran Jazz performer is chosen for special recognition with an award presented at the JAZZ Event. The JAZZ Event has been the Congregation's major outreach activity for eight years. Drawing more people from the community than any other event we offer, bringing our Congregation together with people with whom we do not usually have an ongoing "social conversation". A large portion of our guests are from the African American segment of our community. The UUCP JAZZ Event is not planned and implemented as a fundraiser. We, nevertheless, regularly consider ways in which the Event might allow some financial contribution to the Congregation. Important note: The Racial & Social Justice Team usually produces the JAZZ Event without using funds from the Congregation's budget. We are exploring ways in which more members of the Congregation could be involved in the JAZZ Event We would like to see the concept of UUCP members as 'ambassadors" for the JAZZ Event - prior to the Event, and during - more fully developed. Our JAZZ Event is always a gala affair: appreciative listening. smiles, laughter...spirits lifted... by all that "heavenly" music! Reservations are encouraged! News from Steve Savitz (in China!) Hi everyone, I have been here for three weeks with another 10 days to go and I have had a great time. I fortunately have a cell phone and Internet service in China so I have been in touch with my family often so that has helped some of the loneliness. Teaching is something I do between touring and I am having many great adventures which I can tell you about when I return. My students are OK but the language problem is large for about 20% of the class. They all try very hard. I have seen so much in Beijing and I spent a 4 day weekend in the ancient city of Xian which was the former capital of China, which is about 800 miles away which is where the Terra Cotta Warriors, and Yangling Museum, a new museum that is as good as the one with the Terra Cotta Warriors. The culture and art of China is incredible and people have been wonderfully nice and helpful to me. I have seen many archeological findings and digs/museums from the neolithic period until the present and it is amazing. Beijing is a rough city to get around, few signs in English on streets, subways. Most merchants don't speak English and most menus are not translated so I go to places with pictures of the food unless I am with someone Chinese. This will all change before the Olympics in 2008 they say- I don't think so. I lucked out with a student of mine at Stevens who is from Beijing and she called all her personal and business friends and told them I was coming to China and for them to take care of me- boy did they. Not to get into the details but I have been given the royal treatment. I have had major help in taking me to most spots . I have seen many of the popular attractions including the Great Wall, Ming Tombs, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Terra Cotta Warriors and lots of stuff than tourists usually don't see. I often go to many of the Buddhists and Confusion temples/gardens over the city to escape from the noise and congestion of Beijing. Being here for this length of time and experiencing the Buddhist rituals and environment first hand is most interesting and allows me a much better appreciation and understanding of the ideas. I have experienced food from most of the regions of China and listened to music from Mongolia, southern China, etc., etc. Not to bore you more, I am ready to go home and have one more week of classes then I will probably go on a fishing trip (carp and trout) on a wonderful high gorge river about 80 km from Beijing and climb a less crowded part of the Great Wall ( hope this is safe?. It is an over night trip and we sleep in a farmhouse. So as you would expect here are few photos from the more that 650 I have taken so far. I did not label each - just enjoy the view. Looking forward to seeing all my friends and family when I return. I feel most fortunate in many ways. Miss you all! Steve -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As most all of you know I am on a ten month contract with UUCP so I am not available in July and August. I hope it is needless to say that I expect to be called by the Board or Caring Coordinator should a dire health emergency arise with a congregant. Today is the last day I will be checking my church email account, so do not think I am ignoring you if I do not respond! I'm now turning my focus to my real estate work for the summer, hoping to actually make a couple of sales in this slow market. All referrals are welcome! I also look forward to hosting friends from California next week, as well as my four nieces who arrive from Flagstaff, Dallas and Chicago in late July. Yikes! I'm going on a three day Buddhist meditation retreat the week before in preparation. Hmmm, maybe I should have scheduled it for after they leave. In any case I look forward to seeing you in the fall, rested and raring to go. Have a fun fourth of July parade! Faithfully, Maj-Britt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://www.uuserver.org/pipermail/uucp/attachments/20070628/3582a8d1/attachment.html
