Lauren & her wondrous group of three veterans, (Tim Horner-drums, Rufus Reid-bass, & Allen Farnham on piano deliver a myriad of artistic polyphonic jewels joined to a panoply of reflection, color, & dynamics. Free Copies of Slave Reparations Documentary According to national polls, the idea of paying reparations for the harm caused by slavery is supported by the majority of black Americans but opposed by the majority of white Americans. As the class-action lawsuit calling for compensation for slavery advances, without information on the reasons reparations are being currently sought, this lack of understanding will only deepen the nation's existing racial divide. In order to promote educated discussions on this controversial issue, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Palisades, though a grant from the Fund for Unitarian Universalist Responsibility, is distributing a limited number of copies of the documentary Slave Reparations: The Final Passage. These copies will be given free to any group willing to hold a video/discussion session. An expert on reparations is not needed as the documentary is quite comprehensive. To date over forty such sessions have already been held using this program. Sessions have taken place in New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Cleveland. Slave Reparations: The Final Passage was part of several film festivals, including the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, the African Diaspora Film Festival in New York, the New Orleans Human Rights Festival, and the bfm International Film Festival in London. Participation among audience members typically creates an interesting session. In this program, Prof. Manning Marable, Dr. Alvin Poussaint, Rev. Herbert Daughtry, and other leading reparations proponents discuss the legacy of slavery and address the most often voiced objections to the current request for reparations: "It happened so long ago." "I had nothing to do with it." "Other groups suffered too." "Injustices were erased with welfare and affirmative action." If you are a member of, or in contact with, any organization that might be want a free copy of this program and is interested in spreading understanding about the issue of reparations for slavery, please call Arlene Corsano at 201-387-8143, or send an e-mail to: ACECorsano at hotmail.com. March 16, 2007 - A Statement from Rev. William G. Sinkford, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association: I am deeply disappointed by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's recent homophobic remarks. General Pace's comments were profoundly disrespectful to gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans, including the thousands in uniform who are serving with honor in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. What saddens me the most is that Pace's comments, while offensive, are well within the bounds of the US armed forces' anti-discrimination guidelines. Under the current "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, discrimination is thriving in our military. Gay and lesbian personnel may legally be denied employment or later discharged solely because of their sexual orientation. Last year, this policy allowed the Department of Defense to fire 612 service members. Others are subject to secrecy, fear and harassment, and many of these are fighting men and women who are already in harm's way every day. Unknown numbers of qualified and patriotic men and women choose not to join the military for these reasons, and this sad loss is one that our nation can ill afford. It is immoral for an overextended and depleted military to throw away the contributions of brave and talented service members. A military operating under a discriminatory employment policy fails the soldiers whose sacrifices guarantee the American ideals of liberty and justice for all. It fails all of us. It is immoral to ban lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons from serving openly in the military, and the policy which mandates such discrimination must be overturned. I call on all Americans who objected to General Pace's remarks to join me in demanding the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are planning to move from a small, tightly knit community of faith to an organization having a significant impact on the surrounding community. The world will soon know that at UUCP...... WE'RE STEPPING ON OUT (THE CANVASS DINNER'S THEME) In the coming weeks, you will learn more about the aggressive plans the Board will propose for your consideration. We intend to improve the community, in both the secular and spiritual areas. Pound for pound, UUCP has the highest concentration of talent, will -power, and experience of any Congregation in America. What we need now, is for everyone to support the new, expanded initiative with generous pledge donations. Pledging is the bedrock of any organization and will ultimately determine just how committed we are. We have to STEP OUT of the old way of thinking that assumes "small is beautiful". We have to STEP UP to the challenge of creating an environment in which new people will be encouraged by our deeds to join us. We must STEP IN the ring and take on the difficult problems facing our community as much as our size and interest allow. Congratulations!!! The COM is in the final stages of organizing a Focus Group with the RSJ Team representatives as well as other congregational members to help prepare a recommendation to the Board based on the areas of interest generated at the Workshop. Our goal as previously stated is to renew energy and involvement for racial and social justice that fits with UUCP's size and mission. We will report back to the congregation shortly after the Focus Group with the results of our recommendation to the Board. Vacations and other scheduling conflicts have been worked out and we are finalizing the date for the Focus Group this week. Thank you for your patience and interest." *** CD Review/Lauren Hooker/Right Where I Belong .....Formidable comes to mind when I ponder the musicianship of the backing contained therein for jazz singer Lauren Hooker's new CD effort. And, "swing" is the positive result of all that musical interplay. Lauren & her wondrous group of three veterans, (Tim Horner-drums, Rufus Reid-bass, & Allen Farnham on piano deliver a myriad of artistic polyphonic jewels joined to a panoply of reflection, color, & dynamics. As for Lauren, she is the embodiment of the aesthetic, deeper, philosophical side of the vocal idiom. Her passionate delivery is imbued with candor, structure, reflection, & lovely kaleidoscopic song patterns that are certainly easy to listen to. George W. Dear fellow congregants, If you were at the service Sunday, you heard Leyn Burrows talk about how over the next couple of weeks you are going to be hearing about the planning that your Board of Trustees has been doing to create an exciting new comprehensive multi-year plan that will have us Steppin' Out and growing in ways that we never have before. Although you will be hearing a little bit each week, the Board would like to invite you to a informational meeting after the service on Sunday, April 15th to share these plans with you and answer any questions that you might have. One piece that we would like to share with you right now is that in support of these goals, the Board voted to formally create a Marketing and Outreach Team. This new team will be headed up by Leyn Burrows. We look forward to seeing you on the 15th.
