As 200 years ago? As 50 years ago? . Do we need God to be good? . What are Humanist moral principles? What are UU moral principles? UU Events Nov 11: Veterans Day/Armistice Day This year, we will celebrate Veterans Day to recognize and remember the brave women and men of the armed forces by asking our government to bring them home. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It remembered the end of the Great War in 1918. But it also falls in between the anniversaries of several peace agreements. Let's reclaim Armistice Day as a time of remembrance of the horrors of war. Write to Congress, the White House, and your candidates of choice and tell them you do not want Congress to Approve Secretary Gates' $190 Billion funding of the war. Without safe and timely withdrawal of American Troops, reconciliation with the Iraqi people, or promises to physically, emotionally and financially supporting the Troops; we cannot allow this money to be spent. Congress and the White House continue to exploit the brave sacrifices that our military personnel and families offer to their country. The greatest way to support our Troops is by bringing them home safely. >From the UUA Advocacy News [ UUA at mail.democracyinaction.org] General Interest Calling all Couch Potatoes Convertible Sofa/bed looking for new and friendly home in neighborhood. The plan is to establish a pre-school classroom to accommodate the 21/2 through 5 year old children of the teenage parent participants of the Program. This expansion will provide seamless service for the children from 6 weeks old until they enter the Public School system. The goal is to be able to hire a full time teacher and begin this expansion by the first of the year. Providing effective life skills and parenting training, and counseling, as well as quality day care, for low income teenage parents in Bergen County is the mission of The West Side Infant and Teen Parent Program. It is asked that you make a commitment to attend as often as possible, but newcomers are welcome to begin at any point. This year Rev. Maj-Britt Johnson will be organizing the sessions around the book: Essential Spirituality: Exercises from the World's Religions to Cultivate Kindness, Love, Joy, Peace, Vision, Wisdom and Generosity, by Roger Walsh, M.D., Ph.D. It is not necessary to buy or read the book. Each session will contain time for one on one sharing, meditation and some yoga or other form of attention to the physical self. Women for Women International Women in the Congo have been leading very difficult lives - violence, rape, extreme poverty. Now there is a way we can help them, by sponsoring individual women in the Congo and other ravaged nations. Women for Women International allows individuals and groups, for $27 per month, to sponsor individual women - provide money to feed their families, go to school, learn job skills, meet in groups to develop hope and confidence. If you would like to become part of a UUCP group - share the expense and gain the satisfaction of helping a desperate woman and her family - please contact Judy Stiller, Judy Manton, or Svetlana Lisanti. Science and Humanist Study Group The next meeting of the Science and Humanist Study Group will be Friday, December 7 at 7:00 pm. This month's subject is "What is Science," an investigation into the nature of science and the scientific method and the differences between science and non-science. The leader and host for this session will be Steve Ellis - here are some questions for your consideration: . What is science anyway? Is science a kind of faith? . What is a scientific theory? What makes it scientific? . Is there such a thing as a "scientific method"? Is science objective? . Is it possible to prove that a scientific theory is false? .
