Join Rev. Sinkford's Call to End the War!
Friends,
On September 6, I faxed a message to every member of Congress telling them, "Not another dollar. Not another life." To make sure they heard me, I am headed to Capitol Hill with my colleague Rev. John H. Thomas, the United Church of Christ's General Minister and President. On October 10 we will be walking into your representatives' offices to tell them to end the war and I want to bring you with me!
I invite you to sign the petition linked below, calling for an end to our reliance on violence as the first, rather than the last, resort and an end to the arrogant unilateralism of preemptive war. Join me in speaking truth to those who have run from it. Please sign this petition and add your voice to 25,000 other Unitarian Universalists who say that security is found in building beloved community, not by dominating others.
Sincerely,
Rev. William G. Sinkford
President, Unitarian Universalist Association

UUCPers Make their Voices Heard for Peace and Justice
In the last two weeks UUCPers have spoken out! Twenty two of us signed a
downloaded hard copy of the End the War in Iraq petition initiated by UUA
President Rev. Bill Sinkford and provided at the services by the R&SJ Team.
Rev. Sinkford is asking for 25,000 UUs to sign this petition that he
personally will bring to Congress on October 10. Our 22 signatures have been
faxed to the UUA. Additional UUCPers may have also signed the petition
electronically. For those who wish to, it is not too late to add your name
by accessing recent copies e-mailed by Jonathan King or Rev. Maj-Britt
Johnson or at www.uua.org.
At the same time, the Team supplied prepared letters to Governor Blanco of
the State of Louisiana asking for justice in the treatment of the six
African American teenagers known as the Jena 6. These young high school
students are facing long prison sentences for reacting to racist harassment
and violence while the perpetrators go unpunished. Fifteen of us, so far,
have signed letters which were mailed individually to Gov. Blanco.
We covenant to affirm and promote the goal of world community with peace,
liberty, and justice for all.

>From the "UUA Advocacy News":
As soon as coffee hour ended on Sunday, folks went into their church offices
and started faxing in their petition sign-up sheets. Since then we have been
receiving them every day, hundreds of them! We have seen petitions come in
from all over the country; we have seen some congregations sending in 10
sheets or more; and, we have discovered the need to invest in a better fax
machine for the office.
This Sunday is our last chance to get signatures before the deadline at noon
on Tuesday the 9th. We know many of you have been collecting signatures and
are planning on continuing this week. If you have not seen the petition at
your church yet, you can download it here.
One thing you could do to ensure that all the signatures make it into the
system before the deadline is take an hour or two and enter in the
signatures you collect from your home computer. You can do that by visiting
the electronic petition page and just entering one name and address after
another. If you do not have the time or energy for that, make sure you fax
the petitions in to (202) 296-4673 by noon on Tuesday.
And, thanks to your support we already have over 8,000 signatures - by far
the biggest rallying of UUs around a single cause in the history of the
Washington Office. That is more people than attended General Assembly in
Boston 2003, the largest GA in the Association's history. Congratulations to
you!

Subject: [UUCP] Maj thoughts column - women in Congo, not so far away
Message-ID: <004401c80aa5$8f933510$6501a8c0@client001>
Attached please find my minister's column, or read below.
Dear Congregants,
Did you read the New York Times this past Sunday? If you did, most likely you had the same reaction to the article about women in the Congo that I did. It was on the front page. 27,000 women mutilated and raped in one area alone over a short period of time. There is so much bad news in the world that I usually find I have to screen some of it out. There's too much to do, too much to feel. This piece of news shot past my guards like a heat-seeking missile and broke me into sobs. I prayed: God, what in the hell can I do? And then assumed I could do nothing, at least not right now. The next day I received an email from a good colleague Charlie Ortman who is minister of our congregation in Montclair. He has passed it on to all his colleagues in N.J. Here is the significant portion of that email (in italics).
Charlie,
First, thanks to you, we have raised nearly $30,000 for Women for Women International (www.womenforwomen.org). Our event with founder Zainab Salbi on June 19th was "magical" as she described it. Our work was featured in their current newsletter, attached. Still, the war drum beats and the mission remains: helping women survivors of war rebuild their lives through financial assistance, micro-credit and skills training, and rights awareness education.
On October 16th, we will welcome the Country Directors from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo and Nigeria to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair (www.uumontclair.org). These remarkable women direct the field operations for their assigned territory: from start-up through implementation, they provide the leadership. To give you a sense of their background, I've included brief biographical sketches at the end of this note.
Can you join us at 7:30 p.m. on October 16th? Maybe you'd consider inviting a colleague. We have a unique opportunity for her. Read on.
Our friends at Women for Women are doing something special for us. They are holding 100 sisters - 20 each from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Rwanda - for "live" matches with new sisters on October 16th. What it means it that you will walk away with the photo and dossier of your sister that very evening. Maybe you know someone who would be interested in sponsoring a sister?
Perhaps you can help create your own giving circle right now by joining together 5, 10 or 20 women as part of a circle here directly supporting a circle across the globe. It's a unique and powerful way to build community with your colleagues as you share support and swap stories of your sisters' progress.
***
How can I not go? As far as I'm concerned Something Out There answered my prayer. I will be going on October 16th. I am inviting other women from UUCP to go with me. Perhaps we can become one of those circles which will sponsor a sister. If you can't go, or you are not a woman, there will very likely be a way you can help behind the scenes. I'll find out exactly how next week.
If you would like to go please let me know ASAP at majbjohn at optonline.net, and I will call in the number coming from our congregation.
Faithfully,
Maj-Britt

>From the UUA Advocacy News
Thank you for all your hard work. Together, we UUs collected over 13,000
signatures in just the last three weeks. The fax machine was running
non-stop (we need a new one), and Adam and crew stayed into the wee hours of
the night, energized by your response. On Wednesday, UUA President Bill
Sinkford, along with Adam, Rob and others, presented 13,006 signatures to
congressional leaders. Together with Rev. John Thomas and the delegation
from our partners at the United Church of Christ (UCC), over 60,000
signatures were presented. It truly was our biggest action ever, and we
thank you for making UU history with us. We have used our religious voices
to witness for peace. Let us pray that Congress will respond.
And let us not stop here but continue to witness to stop this war. United
for Peace and Justice is coordinating events in 11 cities on Oct. 27th. The
UUA is supporting these events. Please send delegations from your
congregations with banners, and be a visible witness for peace. For more
information see
United for Peace & Justice.
Lastly, we would like to give a nod to former Vice President Al Gore and the
UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Together they were
awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace today, in recognition of their work in
raising awareness of global warming/climate change. As you all know, the UUA
addressed the Threat of Global Warming/Climate Change as our Statement of
Conscience in 2006.

Dear UUCP Members and Friends,
The Racial and Social Justice Ministry Task Force invites you to attend a
congregational meeting to share comments, questions, and enthusiasms
regarding the expanded UUCP Racial and Social Justice Ministry.
Sunday, October 28, 2007 11:20 -12:45
The Task Force will offer activities and projects you may want to become a
part of.
Helping to make the UUCP RSJ ministry a social action reality!
We will also hear about important initiatives in process by the Outreach
Team.
Background/History
. A process was initiated last year as requested by the Board of
Trustees to the Committee on Ministry (COM) to evaluate the UUCP Racial and
Social Justice Ministry(RSJM) and offer recommendations for a reinvigorated
and expanded RSJM.
. A workshop was held in February, which very many attended, to share
ideas and explore interests and information.
. In April, a Focus Group meeting was held to evaluate results of the
workshop and recommend action steps.
Recommendations
After reviewing the COM Recommendation Report the Board of Trustees endorsed
the formation of a Task Force to oversee the development, implementation and
monitoring of an expanded RSJM.
The Task force will be comprised of the former members of the 'sunsetting'
Focus Group, and the primary social justice focus will be Homelessness.
(n.b. The Task Force is always open to additional members)
Other social issues identified in the COM Recommendation:
. Children and Youth
. GLBT Concerns
. Economic Disparity
. Immigration Rights, and
. Race/Racism/Antiracism.
Many of these issues will be addressed as they intersect with homelessness.
These issues will also be the subjects of a Film/Speaker/Discussion Series
being developed by Task Force members.
The Racial and Social Justice TEAM (RSJT) will be represented on the Task
Force (as it was on the Focus Group). Simultaneously, the RSJT will continue
its "independent" program focusing on the questions of
race/racism/antiracism, the pursuit of PEACE, and the celebration of
diversity in ALL areas of life.
Looking forward in enthusiastic faith,
The UUCP RSJM Task Force

*UUA Begins Fire Relief Fund to Help Californians*
October 24, 2007
The fires currently sweeping across southern California have affected
Unitarian Universalists (UUs) in many communities. Fires are currently
burning in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside,
Orange and San Diego Counties. Damage reports remain incomplete at this
time.
According to the Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA) Pacific
Southwest District (PSWD) Executive Ken Brown, ninety percent of the members
of our Chalice Congregation in Escondido have evacuated their homes, with
several homes burned. Meanwhile, members of other UU congregations have
opened their homes to the evacuees.
In response to this disaster, the Pacific Southwest District of the UUA has
begun the PSWD Fire Relief Fund. A district committee will disburse all
funds collected to UU congregations, UUs in need, community groups in
relationship with UU congregations, and other groups supporting those most
in need.
Ken Brown notes, "As we have found in the past, insurance does not cover
such devastation and it can take years for those affected to recover."
Donations to the PSWD Fire Relief Fund are being
accepted online. If you wish to contribute by mail, please send funds to:

Nov 11: Veterans Day/Armistice Day
This year, we will celebrate Veterans Day to recognize and remember the
brave women and men of the armed forces by asking our government to bring
them home. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It remembered
the end of the Great War in 1918. But it also falls in between the
anniversaries of several peace agreements. Let's reclaim Armistice Day as a
time of remembrance of the horrors of war.
Write to Congress, the White House, and your candidates of choice and tell
them you do not want Congress to Approve Secretary Gates' $190 Billion
funding of the war. Without safe and timely withdrawal of American Troops,
reconciliation with the Iraqi people, or promises to physically, emotionally
and financially supporting the Troops; we cannot allow this money to be
spent. Congress and the White House continue to exploit the brave sacrifices
that our military personnel and families offer to their country. The
greatest way to support our Troops is by bringing them home safely.

Message-ID:
Greetings from the Racial&Social Justice Team!
In the spirit of compassion, equity, and justice reflected in the Seven
Principles and in the UUCP Mission Statement the Board of Trustees announces a
Dedicated Collection the fourth Sunday of each month.
The RSJT has been asked to designate worthy service and justice-seeking
organizations as recipients of the Dedicated Collections.
In turn, the RSJT welcomes from you, our members and friends, your
suggestions for recipient organizations.
We would like to extend our help primarily to organizations in our local
Bergen County Community, but certainly not exclusively.
Leave your suggestions at the Justice Table. They will be carefully
considered.
Thank you.
The next Dedicated Collection will take place on the fourth Sunday in
November.
n.b. We have had two Dedicated Collections already this year. The first
went to the Center for Food Action, and the second took place on Association
Sunday with our Dedicated Collection going to the UUA, earmarked for its
groundbreaking outreach program.

why?
. Is morality today the same as in biblical times? As 200 years ago?
As 50 years ago?
. Do we need God to be good?
. What are Humanist moral principles? What are UU moral principles?
