From majbjohn at optonline.net Sat Sep 1 13:31:11 2007 From: majbjohn at optonline.net (maj-britt) Date: Sat, 01 Sep 2007 14:31:11 -0400 Subject: [UUCP] Hello from your minister Message-ID: <001401c7ecc6$45d90a00$6401a8c0@client001> Dear Congregants, It will be absolutely wonderful to see you next Sunday the 9th when I will rejoin you for the new year. My topic will be: "How a vocation can be a vacation" I feel as if I have been gone a very long time, this summer was extremely busy. Michael and I, and all the realtors we know up here in Orange County, were coping with a market that is in a state of animated suspension. You would think that means we are sitting around twiddling our thumbs; but unfortunately a slow time in the real estate market means we have to get out there and hustle ten times harder to get half as much business. I've learned alot, but I can't wait to go half time with that work, let me assure you. I did allow myself several hours early each morning to read, take notes on my reading, meditate, pray, think, write and do yoga, which I do most every day during the year as well. That was the fun part of the summer. Oh and my four nieces came to visit, all at once, for a week, from Chicago, Phoenix and Dallas. I took them to the beach, the Met, Central Park, and so on. It was a blast but I called my mother (who had four kids born in six years) and said: How did you do it? And I meant it. I don't believe that I had any space in my brain to think until they left. I can only assume that was because I was in hyper vigilant mode the entire time. Mom said she felt vindicated. I begin back at UUCP again this Tuesday, September 4th, when I join the Board for the monthly Board of Trustees meeting. Jon King and I have already caught up a bit on what is going on and we will do more of that at a one-on-one meeting before the Board meeting. It'll be a very Board oriented week as we also have a day-long Board retreat on Saturday the 8th to welcome and orient the new Board members and work on some goals and so on. I hope to catch up with most of the rest of you on Sunday and if you're wondering when you can call I will keep the same schedule as last year. The best times to call me are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Or you can always email me at majbjohn at optonline.net and we can set up a time to talk. Donna Buono will be leading it, back in the Scout Room. However I would ask that the parents bring their children into the service for the first few minutes, for singing and chalice lighting, and so on, then Donna will take them back. Emmadora Boucher had to be away this weekend but she will return next week. The new Board policy, consistent with UUA guidelines is that there will be an adult in the room with the kids, to assist Emmadora. She will continue to artfully lead the children with a theme, and a craft project; and one of four adults will assist her as necessary, take kids to the bathroom and so on. These four adults are: Donna, Tom Gundling, Karen Shannon, and Joan Christos. They will take turns, but this will give the young ones a consistent presence over the course of the year. I am sure that if you are burning to present a theme or creative project to the kids, you could still find a slot during the year. Emmadora will have to be away now and then, and the core four would probably appreciate your support. Emmadora is currently cataloguing the books she's used, with an annotated bibliography, noting what lessons were learned! So others will be able to benefit in the future from her experience. Thank you Emmadora! See you all Sunday, Maj-Britt P.S. anyone who has a chance to please read the attached article from the UUA.org site. I have a feeling it applies to this Sunday's sermon. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It will arrive in your email twice a month, during the weeks I do not preach. You can either download the attachment, or read it below. I did not sit down to write about 9-11, but it is impossible to type the date without noting it. My own hope for this "anniversary" date is that we Americans can do two things: Pause to remember and honor those who lost their lives, and, let the memory of this occasion bring us into closer fellowship with the rest of the world. May whatever residue of shock and awe remains in our minds from that day be a catalyst for communion, not contention, with all groups and individuals, who have suffered before, and since 9-11, all over the world, from acts of hate and violence. This past Sunday, four members of the congregation and I went into the city for the Dream for Darfur event at Dag Hammersjkold Plaza. At the same time others of our congregation were at various events in the tri state area such as the Farm Aid event, and a concert to benefit AIDS research. Each of us went where we felt called. I am grateful for that. At the Plaza we five heard a 98 year old female survivor of the Armenian genocide speak, as well as survivors of the Nanking massacre, the Nazi holocaust, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge genocide, the genocide in Rwanda and now Darfur. It was impossible to miss the message: We live on a planet which cycles through waves of genocide, and its victims are a diverse group. It occurs to me that these cycles of history are so stupefying that we almost take them as par for the course, though the words "never again" are ritually recited after each resurgence of this communal disease. But, as many of the speakers said, "Never again keeps happening", and then we recite "never again", again. It occurred to me that the descendents of the victims of other genocides were there at the Plaza as well. And they were we. We were (any and sometimes all of the following): African Americans whose ancestors were the victims of the slave trade, persons whose Native American ancestors were the victims of systematic extermination, and men and women with European ancestry who are descendants of women (aka "witches") who were exterminated by the millions in Europe, over a period of several hundred years. If, as I sometimes imagine, the woven strands of our DNA are threaded with galaxies of, or even sprinkled lightly with, our ancestor's memories, as well as their traits, it's a good thing they are kept at a distance from our conscious minds. The present stories are enough to overwhelm us and cause resignation. Or they can give us the resolve to re-solve. The choice is ours. Thankfully there was a message of hope as the leaders of Save Darfur.org and the Olympic Dream for Darfur described the efforts by students in the U.S. and various groups throughout the world to end the genocide. The emphasis was on carrying the light of hope and action. An Olympic athlete lit a torch and passed the light to the little band of survivors, whom we then followed on a walk to the Chinese Embassy. The next Olympics are scheduled for Beijing, and the Chinese government has deep economic ties with the government of Sudan which is controlling the genocide in the section of Sudan called Darfur. The embassy's doors were barred, no one was home. The light was passed from the torch to the candles held by the marchers. Then we each went our separate ways. We are all familiar with the empty promises of politics, but we also know that it is easy for any one of us to fall asleep, to say, there's nothing I can do, it's too far away, and I have no power. I decided that if I was to stay awake I had to be responsible for my own consciousness first. I have to keep my own light on, and my torch lit. So I pledged to myself (and mentioned it to another UUCP member as a way of holding myself accountable perhaps, and now to you) that I would add the lighting of a candle for the refugees of Darfur (and yes, of course, other people as well) to my morning prayer and meditation session; and that I will take an action on a regular basis, whether that means attending a rally, or writing an email, or making a phone call. How do you keep your light on? Faithfully, Maj-Britt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For those of you not familiar with Small Group Ministry, smaller groups of congregants meet monthly to explore in depth topics of importance. Small Group Ministry gives members an opportunity to get to know each other more closely and grow spiritually together. In this service, several congregants will speak on what Small Group Ministry has meant to them. Martha Patton will be coordinating the service. HIKE: After services, Martha Patton, Tom Hart and Mike Belini are planning on hiking, leaving Englewood about 11:45 and trying to get the Reeves meadow nature center on 7 lakes drive in Harriman about 12:30. Anyone with lunch, hiking boots and the willingness to hike at least 5 miles on rocky, hilly terrain is welcome to join us. It should be a beautiful afternoon. Definitely call or email before 9 on Sunday if you?re planning on meeting us up there (?cause plans can change) or if you have questions about what sort of gourmet food you should bring to share with Tom (or whether you can handle the hike. etc.) UUA National Ad campaign: Beginning in early October, as part of an effort to offer the good news of our faith to the larger world, the Unitarian Universalist Association will begin a partnership with Time Magazine and their website, time.com . This partnership will include: *Print ads in Time Magazine * "Advertorials" - printed material that promotes Unitarian Universalism and directs readers to a web archive of Time articles focusing on current religious and ethical issues *Customized information on time.com directing users to specially designed pages on our website, UUA.org. This special campaign is designed to raise awareness of Unitarian Universalism and to share our unique message with a larger audience. Our partnership with Time will ensure that Unitarian Universalism is an important voice in the religious landscape. This initiative will be a highlight of our first-ever Association Sunday, to be celebrated in hundreds of congregations on and around October 14th. Association Sunday will offer all Unitarian Universalists an opportunity to support our movement's efforts to share the good news of our faith with a wider circle of seekers. To help congregations in this vital work, we are providing many resources, including a comprehensive FAQ sheet, new hospitality tools, and much more. In addition, all of our congregations will soon receive a wonderful new DVD introducing Unitarian Universalism to visitors and spiritual seekers. This also will be a valuable tool for including new members. These innovative materials will help us reach a wider audience than ever before and I encourage you to find out more. (See Jon King for more info on this). We will continue to update you as we approach the marketing launch in early October. These are exciting times for Unitarian Universalism as we step out into the world in a new way. I'd like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks in advance. Thank you for opening your doors, and your hearts, to the new possibilities on the horizon. In faith, William G. Thank you Judy! Thank all of you in advance for your heartfelt donations on Sunday! Since 1992 the number of people coming to the Food Centers for help has increased dramatically each year. In 200 food was provided for 25,911 people. By 2006 the number was 38,900. More senior citizens were being served, now accounting for 10 percent of the total, and more of the low-income working poor whose wages do not keep up with increases in rent, utility and transportation costs. The Racial&Social Justice Team with The Board of Trustees urges you to participate in this 'win-win' plan. (Checks should be made out to UUCP with a "Food Drive" memo on the check) ??????????????????????????????????? *Upcoming sermon topics * *September 23rd* "Power Tools" - the Jewish High Holy Days remind us to look at our own behavior and clean off our slate. Sinkford's Call to End the War To: Andrea Lerner I hope you will share this request with as many folks as you can. It's the biggest single action we've ever undertaken, and we only have a short time to reach our goal of 25,000 signatures. The good news is that we're alredy more than 10% there; in fact nearly 700 people signed in the last 24 hours! Individuals can sign the petition on-line, OR download and print a hard copy to collect signatures at their congregation. Any help you can give is appreciated. Thanks! Rob Keithan and Adam Gerhardstein UUA Washington Office ----------------------------------------- Join Rev. Sinkford's Call to End the War! Friends, On September 6, I faxed a message to every member of Congress telling them, "Not another dollar. Not another life." To make sure they heard me, I am headed to Capitol Hill with my colleague Rev. John H. Thomas, the United Church of Christ's General Minister and President. On October 10 we will be walking into your representatives' offices to tell them to end the war and I want to bring you with me! I invite you to sign the petition linked below, calling for an end to our reliance on violence as the first, rather than the last, resort and an end to the arrogant unilateralism of preemptive war. Join me in speaking truth to those who have run from it. Please sign this petition and add your voice to 25,000 other Unitarian Universalists who say that security is found in building beloved community, not by dominating others. Sincerely, Rev. William G.
