Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as "brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women" had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. Ali is up-front about having lied about her background in order to obtain her citizenship, which led to further controversy in early 2006, when an immigration official sought to deport her and triggered the collapse of the Dutch coalition government. Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh's death, her voice is forceful and unbowed-like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion. Members are welcome to attend as well. I will give a brief history and introduction to UU and then we will open for questions and discussions. Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen Many of you know that I volunteer at the Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen. That's my personal outreach to my community. Many of you practice outreach to the community by bringing the food that I take to the soup kitchen the first Sunday in the month. Let me tell you a little about the soup kitchen. We feed lunch to 30 to 35 people at noon every Monday of the month. There are three course meals which include soup, an entree (meat and side dish) and dessert. I have worked there since February '08 and never have I seen a bean; black, white, or red served. Nor have I see a free anything, fat free, gluten or wheat free, though I found out today they serve sugar free Jell-O pudding. The folks like side dishes of Mac& Cheese, instant potatoes, string beans; for desert they like Jell-O, ice cream, and canned fruit. And everything is instant; it's easier for the cooks who start at 9:00 AM making food for 30+ people. When you plan to bring in food think about a side dish or dessert for 30+ people. Please do not bring open boxes or dented cans, some of the items we can use for side dishes and desserts are: . Spaghetti and meat sauce (we have a lot of pasta right now) . Beans; French cut or whole . Instant potatoes . Mac and cheese . Sugar free chocolate pudding or jello . Canned peaches or fruit cocktail . Fruit juice and drinks . Other items (Condiments or items to be combined with recipes ) ? Canned tomatoes diced ? Ketchup in regular bottles to place on tables ? Large cans of broth chicken or beef ( the cooks make great soups with these) As the needs of the soup kitchen changes I will add to the list. The folks who use the Soup kitchen's services are a diverse people by age, gender, economic and ethnic groups. They are so very thankful for the service we provide and I am happy to participate. Copyright C Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved Quotations from the Wayside Pulpit More than forty years ago, a despondent Korean War veteran stood on the Brooklyn Bridge ready to jump. His suicidal mood was brought up short when he remembered a message he had seen posted outside his neighborhood church. It read: "When you come to the end of your rope-tie a knot in it and hang on." The man decided to hang on to life because of hope offered by a bulletin board. Roadside messages like the one he remembered once dotted church grounds in 500 cities on four continents. How this tradition began can be traced to two differing tales, one starting in Massachusetts and the other in England. The roadside bulletin board was first introduced to North American churches in 1919 by Henry Hallam Saunderson, minister of the First Parish Church (Unitarian) of Brighton, Massachusetts, and secretary of the American Unitarian Association's publicity department from 1915 to 1921. Saunderson noticed that "many bulletin boards in front of churches were ineffectual because they were either kept empty or held notices which had outlived their usefulness." Inspired by the local wayside shrines he had seen in Europe, he decided to create "wayside sermons," liberal messages that would make people stop, read, and search their conscience. Saunderson started by posting brief quotations each Sunday night on the bulletin board outside his church. When hundreds of people stopped to read the messages, he decided the idea might have a wider usefulness. After Saunderson polled various clergy in the area, one hundred ministers agreed to subscribe to his wayside sermons. Subscribers would erect bulletin boards of the same size and proportion on their church grounds and share the expense of having weekly messages printed on 32 x 44 inch sheets that would be readable from across the street. At one point, twelve different denominations subscribed to the service, including Presbyterian, Baptist, United Church of Christ, and Episcopal churches. These message boards became known as the Wayside Community Pulpit, reaching as many as three million readers, according to a 1924 poll. During the subscription's early conception, Saunderson composed each weekly message. When the American Unitarian Association picked up on Saunderson's idea, it culled quotations from the world's literature, and, in 1956, expanded their scope to include contributions from ministers and laypeople. The wayside message was first introduced to British churches by the Reverend H. Harrold Johnson. Called in 1919 to bring new life into the declining Cross Street Chapel in Manchester, Johnson created the Wayside Pulpit "Thought for the Week," pithy messages that would appeal to the person in the street, rather than the person in the pew. These messages were hand painted on 40 x 30 inch posters and were changed each week. The first Wayside Pulpit was posted on December 26, 1920, for all of Manchester to see. From that day on, a new poster appeared every Sunday morning for the next fifty years. Even when England was blitzed during World War II and the Chapel stood roofless, a weekly message appeared. The legacy of Wayside Pulpits in England is carried on by the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches. In North America, the Wayside tradition continued under the Unitarian Universalist Association, which was created in 1961 when the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America merged. Between 1963 and 1977, the Wayside Community Pulpit struggled to survive against changing sentiments and rising manufacturing costs. The number of Wayside subscribers had dwindled to 220 in 1968. More people viewed the Wayside Community Pulpit as an identification of a Unitarian Universalist church, rather than as a good message to be widely used. Many non-Unitarian Universalist churches agreed with the idea of the service, but didn't always agree with the liberal content of the quotations. By 1982, the frequency of the publication decreased from one quotation per week to one quotation every ten days. In 1986, it shrank to twenty-six quotations once a year. By 1989, the service was reduced to a set of quotations every two years. That is how it exists today. This collection contains quotations from the Wayside tradition started in North America. Research into historical Wayside correspondence reveals that there had long been demand for a print collection of the quotations. One attempt was made in 1976, but the result was only a small pamphlet of fifty or so quotes from the last quarter century. When Henry Hallam Saunderson created the first Wayside Community Pulpit in North America in 1919, he thought to spread a little liberal thinking by publishing thought-provoking messages that reflect universal truths. These messages are the essence of Saunderson's legacy, a hope to find the divine in ourselves. May we be so inspired. >From now on, The Weekly Reader will include one quotation from the Wayside Pulpit each week. Here is this week's. We forgive to the extent that we love. We are in shock, and I know that as you read this you will, like me, say: What? How could this be? I just saw Wally... For those of you on our listserve who may be newer to the congregation, Wally was one of the founders of UUCP, with his wife Lee Reid, UUCP's first minister. He is an integral part of the life and collective memory of this community. I have been in touch with his daughters tonight and in the next few days there will be more to report to you about plans for a memorial service, where and when it will be and so on. In the meantime please keep Wally's daughters Kate, Martha and Sarah in your thoughts and prayers. For them this is all so sudden and I know they are comforted knowing Wally has a circle of friends grieving the loss of his presence in our community. Debbie Pires is leading the service this Sunday and she and I have talked and agreed that we will take a significant portion of time during the first part of the service to let the congregation talk about Wally and our feelings about this loss. Then she will do the Passover play she had planned, full of humor and life, something Wally would have enjoyed. Meet the UUA Presidential Candidates Candidates will answer your questions about their vision for the UUA Presidency in anticipation of the upcoming 2009 election. See Ware Lecturer Van Jones Van Jones is working to combine solutions to America's two biggest problems: social inequality and environmental destruction. In 1996, Jones co-founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which promotes positive alternatives to violence and incarceration. The center's Books Not Bars campaign has helped reduce California's overall youth prison population by more than 30 percent. In the aftermath of 2005's Hurricane Katrina, Jones helped to found ColorOfChange.org, the nation's biggest e-advocacy organization tackling Black issues. Over the past five years, Jones has also emerged as a national environmental leader. In June 2007, the City of Oakland, CA adopted a proposal from the Ella Baker Center and the Oakland Apollo Alliance to create a "Green Jobs Corps." The Corps will train youth for eco-friendly ?green-collar? jobs. Now the Center is working with the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) to create the country's first-ever Green Enterprise Zone, to attract environmentally sound industry to Oakland. At the national level, Jones and the Ella Baker Center worked with Congress to pass the Green Jobs Act of 2007. That path-breaking, historic legislation will provide $120 million in funding to train 35,000 people a year in green-collar jobs. Worship together Join us for the largest annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists joining in worship. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, settled minister of All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, OK since 2000. Rev. Lavanhar became widely recognized within the denomination for his development of the "Soulful Sundown Service" program in Boston, which reaches out to unchurched young people. He has spoken frequently on interfaith relations, religious freedom, and on worship for young adults. Members of the public are welcome. Leora Wartofsky, a friend of UUCP who has attended services many times with her husband Charlie Hathaway and two young boys, Henry (12) and Carson (8) is at home now under hospice care. I saw her last night and she is resting comfortably and facing her situation bravely and beautifully, as is Charlie. Leora is Jewish but was not raised religiously. Charlie says that UUCP is the only house of faith she has wanted "to spend more than 15 minutes in, ever". I wanted you to know that your presence has already been a comfort to her in ways you probably weren't aware of. She particularly mentioned that Sally Cummings and Patty Smith have been so helpful. She has struggled for five years with cancer. She's nearing the end of that journey now. Please keep the family in your thoughts, hearts, and prayers. Faithfully, Maj-Britt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't mean you Maurene necessarily but could you organize that? Charlie is there with two young? boys. Leora's mom and sister live nearby so I think they'll be Ok but it would be a wonderful gesture on the part of the congregation. Just to ring the bell and hand it to them and leave.? ? Different people could take different days to drop things off for the next week. Or the same person could do the dropping off. ? I think it is unlikely?Leora will live more than a few more days. She can't take in nourishment and has a bowel obstruction and of course the ovarian cancer has been progressing"If you want to prepare a meal, or offer any service that? would help the family,? please send me an email. My address is molaffey at optonline .net.? If you are offering a meal, please let? me know? what you want to make ( just so we don't bring them the same thing for 6 days in a row) and give me two or three dates when you are able to prepare it.? I believe they might need our help for more than the next week.? Those of you who have lost a close loved one know that the grieving process doesn't end at the service.I'll review everything and make up a schedule. One more request, as I don't know the family, I could use a few volunteers to drop off the meals.? I will co-ordinate the delivery of the meals to the people who are bringing them to the family.Thank you in advance for your help.Peace,Maurene ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This coming weekend is an extremely important weekend in the stewardship of our congregation. This weekend is known as Canvas Weekend when each member, and friends who would like to, make a financial commitment to the congregation for the upcoming church year, which begins on July 1st. We strongly encourage everyone to come to both the Canvas Dinner and Canvas Sunday. The canvas dinner is a fun event where we come together to eat, be entertained and remind us what we value about our wonderful community. On Canvas Sunday, we will have a short meeting at the end of the service to hand out pledge cards This year we are going to ask for pledges at the end of the Canvas Dinner as well as on Canvas Sunday. At both events, there will be information about our revenues and expenses from the prior year and the cost of key services that we would like to have in next year?s budget. Why is this important? It is important because our budget depends on knowing how much money will be committed, which in turn determines what activities, services and ministry we will have for next year. The Board of Trustees will then prepare a recommended budget that is voted on by our members at the Annual meeting in early June. The Financial Health of the Congregation Each year since the inception of our congregation, funds have been drawn down from the endowment to support operating expenses. This year, the plan is to have a balanced budget that relies on a conservative income estimate and that does not rely on funding from the endowment. This means that if we do not have the revenues, we will not fund some programs. Our Challenge I would like to put forth a challenge to each one of you. If each of you could pledge 15% more than last year the congregation could support a half-time ministry and programs that we want to both nurture ourselves and to carry forward our mission. Hope to see you this weekend. If for any reason you can?t be at either of these events, please contact either Bill Hoffman or Jonathan King to discuss your pledge.
