Biyi Bandele, a prolific Nigerian writer, was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company to adapt Aphra Behn's 1688 novella, preserving tales from African slaves emerging from a Dutch slave ship. Playwright Bandele has infused his script with drumming and dance from his Yoruba culture. We have chosen this play in honor of Black History Month and our Ghana program, "Every Child Is Our Child." After the play, we will host a reception in a nearby venue where you will have the opportunity of meeting our new Executive Director, Bruce F. Knotts, a 25-year diplomat of the State Department, who has extensive experience in Africa. Bruce will host a discussion of the play as well as the programs sponsored by the UU-UNO. Tickets for the event are $65.00 (a $10.00 discount from box office prices) which includes the play and a reception. Since tickets are limited you must send your check to the UU-UNO, 777 UN Plaza, Ste 7G, NY, NY 10017 by January 20, 2008. UUCP Community meeting, I wanted to bring you up to date. We met after the service for about an hour and shared with each other our feelings, thoughts and questions both about Maj-Britt being in a search process for a full time position, and our congregation current location and status of growth. People expressed a wide range of feelings that included sadness, anger, fear and confidence, as well as happiness for Maj-Britt.. In addition, both Maj-Britt and I spoke a little about the process that she is in, and what our process going forward will be. As I mentioned Sunday, we will be holding a series of community meetings where we will re-examine and explore who and what we want to be as a congregation, as well as how much we are willing to commit, both financially and in participation, to creating what we want. These meetings are necessary in order for us to develop a clear consensus about our future path. It is also necessary because any new minister will want to know that we have begun a process of self-evaluation and visioning (not to be confused with our vision statement), so that he or she will be able to determine if the "fit" with our congregation would be a good one. I spoke with Andrea Lerner, the UU District of Metro New York District Executive this morning about providing us with information on the process. The district will also provide us with facilitation. We are working on a venue and dates, and will let you know the details shortly. Social Hour on February 3 On Sunday, February 3rd, I will be hosting the breakfast at our UUCP place of gathering in honor of two very special people in my life who are no longer with us. In fact my Grandmother, Constanta Albu, would have been ninety eight years old this February. As for my Mother, Sophia Ionita, she died three years ago at the young age of 72, and she was a most exceptional woman whose presence I miss daily. Praised for her talent as an artist and French teacher at Bogota High School, her memory continues to live within my heart and in the heart of those who benefited from her teachings. In my home her artwork is of constant comfort to me, a token of the love and harmony that once existed in my life, a lost Paradise. Here is an example of the engraved pyrogravure artwork that she created: After opening a door the angel who had been the gatekeeper of Paradise seems to have perhaps reached her destination. Yet in this Garden of a possible Paradise the Angel seems to be afraid of unknown truths, she awaits with a smile the resolution of its daring act. To me it signifies the arrival of my Mother into an afterlife state of existence from where she contemplates her past life. At the same time, there is a deep sense of wonder invading the Garden, the Angel, and life itself. My everyday prayer lifts toward this lost Paradise in the hope of being heard by my Angel, my Mother. My Mother's mother, Constanta, even though a simple woman from the borders of the Danube river in Romania, was a clever, hard working woman who made her way to the capital of Romania, Bucuresti, and next to New York City. She was not afraid of challenges and spoke four languages (Romanian, French, Bulgarian, and English). I was the Granddaughter she spoke so proudly of; she was the Grandmother who comforted me with strength and good advice. Both my Mother, Sophia, and my Grandmother, Constanta, have raised me to be the grown woman I am today; I only hope that I will be able to pass on to my Daughter some of their wisdom and intelligence. Mindy Thompson Fullilove, MD (a member of our congregation, will be one of the leaders of the service at First UU Church of Essex, Orange, NJ on February 10. In recent months, simmering distress in housing markets has exploded into a full-fledged crisis. Inflation in housing prices, coupled with dishonest banking practices, has undermined the stability of US neighborhoods, including those in Orange, NJ. Mindy Fullilove and Patrick Morrissy will reflect on this crisis in light of the history of Orange and the work of HANDS, the local community development agency. The HANDS' strategy is built upon a working philosophy that believes that neighborhoods are revitalized by the actions of hundreds of individuals investing their time, their funds, their energy, and their hopes in the future of that neighborhood. HANDS believes the role of the CDC is to leverage those investment decisions, to bolster public sector action, and to generate more private sector investment. The centerpiece of this strategy is to revitalize neighborhoods through the high-impact development of vacant, troubled properties. Fullilove and Morrissy will link these secular strategies to African American faith traditions, which emphasize positive action in the face of adversity, as well as to the UU principle of the inter-related web of living beings. UUCP Events Sunday, February 3, 2008 is Food Collection Sunday On the first Sunday of each month please bring canned food donations to the Service to help feed our neighbors who are in need. Maj-Britt Johnson - This will be a service in celebration of Black History month. The sermon will focus on both the triumphs of African Americans and the persistence of racism in our country Feb 10 - "Appreciation or Appropriation" - Rev. Wendy Pantoja - In our earnest to be as inclusive of as many people as possible, it is not unusual for Unitarian Universalists to borrow elements or rituals from other cultural and religious traditions. But even with the best of intentions, too often we end up trampling on the identity of the very people with whom we are trying to ally. How can we remain in right relationship while welcoming and honoring others? Feb 17 - "Religion and Community in the Midst of Recession" - Rev Bob Fullilove Feb 24 - "Evolution Sunday" - Al Stawsky, Tom Gundling, and others - UUCP joins with over 500 diverse congregations supporting the truth and teaching of evolution science and the coexistence of religion and science in a free society. March 2 - (to be announced) - Arlene Scala March 9 - (to be announced) - Rev. Maj-Britt Johnson March 16 - (to be announced) - Rev. Bob Fullilove March 23 - (to be announced) - Rev. Maj-Britt Johnson March 30 - (to be announced) - Social Justice Team Science and Humanist Study Group Our next hot discussion will be Friday evening, February 8 at 7:00 PM at the Gundling's in Cresskill. The subject will be: Humans and the Great Apes Difference in degree or kind? This session will be led by our own "resident" anthropology professor, Tom Gundling. Some questions to think about: . What qualities make humans different from non-human primates? . Do apes have these same qualities but to a lesser degree or in a different combination, or not at all? . How might the evolutionary differentiation between humans and apes have happened? Does this give us clues as to how a new, post human species might evolve? . What does the latest research reveal as to: What tools do apes make and use? Is there ape culture? How linguistically savvy are they? Can apes engage in political manipulation of one another? Do they really have faster memory recall than college students? Advance reading will follow or will be available at this Sunday's service or call Al Stawsky at 201-837-9075 or alynways at aol.com for information or answers. RSVPs would be greatly appreciated. UU Events February/March 2008 Phonathon Dear Friends, As a supplement to periodic mailings, Friends of the UUA will be conducting a fundraising phonathon in support of the exciting updates to the Tapestry of Faith curriculum. Beginning February 13th and continuing through March, Direct Advantage, a telemarketing firm located in Pittsburgh, will be phoning members who are currently active Friends of the UUA to ask them to renew their support. Our contract with this firm requires that all callers must be courteous, respectful, and succinct as they offer identified Unitarian Universalists an opportunity to support our Association directly. Your feedback about the calls will help us to monitor their quality. We have established a Friends Phonathon Hotline to facilitate that feedback: Members may send an email to friends at uua.org or call (617) 948-6525 to leave a message to ask to be placed on the "no call" list or to share a comment directly with a UUA staff member. Your willingness to support the UUA enhances our ability to provide services and programs to member congregations and presents avenues for future growth of Unitarian Universalism throughout the country. With gratitude, Liz Baker McClain, Manager Friends of the Unitarian Universalist Association Stewardship & Development Big Ideas for Small Congregations On Saturday, January 26 Judy Bellini, Jon King, Kate Liebhold, Deborah Pires, and Al Stawsky attended a workshop in New York City, sponsored by the UU District of Metro NY, called "Big Ideas for Small Congregations." The five of us were all energized and excited by this workshop, and have come back with all kinds of ideas that we would like to share with the rest of you. We will be getting together shortly to compare notes and to work out a plan. General Interest The History of Black History by Elissa Haney from www.Infoplease.net Dr. Carter G. Woodson Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as " Black History Month." What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied-or even documented-when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books. Blacks Absent from History Books We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population-and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Established Journal of Negro History Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Root Shock at Puffin On Sunday, February 10, 2008, 7:00 PM, Dr. Mindy Fullilove will speak at the Puffin Cultural Forum, as part of Puffin's author series. Her highly acclaimed book Root Shock will be the topic of discussion. UU-UNO Special Theater Party and Reception Please join the UU-UNO for a special theater party and reception Saturday matinee, February 16th, 2:00 pm The UU-United Nations Office has reserved a block of tickets to the award-winning play, "Oroonoko," a tragic love story depicting the journey from kingship to slavery, rebellion, and death. We will notify you of the receipt and hold a ticket for you at the Box Office of the Duke Theater, 229 W. 42nd St., NYC. As in all theatre productions, all ticket sales are final. Don't miss this special opportunity to see a challenging play and meet our new Executive Director and Board! Questions? Call UU-UNO 212-986-5165.
