To some extent that's true as I preached less in February than I usually do, which means I haven't been as visible. However I'm still here, I still love you, and I am still available and welcome your phone calls. I even have time for appointments should you wish to make one! If you would like to talk one on one just email me and we'll set up a time that's mutually convenient. Please do not feel as if you are imposing, I'm your minister, that is what I do. And I hope you will take the initiative because there is no way I can know your needs unless you tell me. I know that you may be wondering how long I will be around. My contracts have always been on a yearly basis: September to September, with July and August off. So my ministry with you will end at the end of June, or to all intents and purposes, when I go to General Assembly toward the end of June. Where I will be next year I still do not know. But it will have to be in a full time position, so I want you to know that I will definitely be leaving, whether to an interim or a settled position. I know that was left hanging a bit, so I want to take it down and lay it on the ground. I for one will be going through some phases of mourning over the next few months, actually I'm there. I think I have been enduring several stages at once. Denial and anger have been the primary ones. Denial allowed me to think June is a long way off and puts my mind into a kind of blur. Anger comes up because, unfortunately, that is how I learned to deal with separation and loss at a young age. Easier to ride out of Dodge in a blaze of fury than in a puddle of tears. Luckily at my advanced age I know that about myself so don't worry, you probably won't ever be at the other end of my anger and in fact mostly it is subsiding. I'm trying not to be angry with myself. I guess I get angry when I think of all we have not been able to accomplish, when we had such high hopes for each other. I suppose anger is easier than feeling other things.like a sense of failure. Have we failed? Have I, because we didn't reach our stated goals and dreams? I suppose so. But what were those? The ones we "failed" in were all about numbers, and externals. How many new people we (don't) have, not having a building, and so on. Important things to be sure, when one wants to grow a church, but the most important? Sometimes the anxiety around not achieving such goals is something I can trace back to a fear of how I/we look to other people. Yes, of course, we will not attract more people in our UU congregations if we don't look good. But what's more important, how we look on the outside, or the state of our souls and our spirits and the content of our characters? When I inventory my own time here I know that I have grown in so many ways, and I hope at least some of you feel the same way. With you I have: Had the opportunity to work on articulating my faith, and the challenges to it only allowed me to hone it more clearly. What a gift to have razor sharp minds to sharpen my own. I encourage you to think about how you articulate your faith, and if, during the whole span of your time at UUCP, you have learned to articulate it more clearly, or at least grown your mind and heart, in some way. I have also grown through the creative interchange with a diverse community unafraid to challenge me at times, and to challenge each other. We have talked openly about race, homophobia, and sometimes about class, and any number of other topics that most people in this world politely avoid, or worse. We can all be grateful for a safe and loving place to do that. How can we help but grow our minds and hearts with those opportunities. Actually, how can we help but change the world! I have also grown through the opportunity to explore the very paths that did NOT work out. How wonderful to be able to take risks and try out things. I couldn't have done that everywhere, or at least not with such abandon. Remember those workshops I led about defining a common spiritual aim around the transforming power of love? We may not have done anything much with it together (it's true that getting UU's to agree is like herding butterflies), except re-write our welcome statement, but I for one, found a focus. It is one that continues to slowly pull together the scattered parts of my multi-faceted UU identity into one coherent spiritual whole; and at the same time reclaims the Universalist heritage in the bargain. Perhaps there are other paths we took at UUCP over the past few years, that did not work out, but which, moved YOU in a good direction. I wonder. if you could inventory you inner growth at UUCP, and I wonder if you can then build on that? Think about it. You, as a group, are not divided as you were when I came. I'm not taking all the credit for that, but I'll take some. We spent hours and hours talking together, some of us, one and one. And then some of you began to build bridges across the great divide. That's huge! There are people and communities that go through entire lifetimes never experiencing the transformative power of reconciliation. Claim that! Those are skills to be used, skills that the world needs! What do you feel you have to give? What is of most value in your very being? To UUCP? To the larger community? How can you make what is on the inside show up more clearly on the outside? I think if you can let yourself do that, and honor the great gifts within you and your fellow congregants, then you will be a presence, and a presence to reckoned with, in your world. It is hard to come to feel so close to 65 people and then wham, suddenly realize you will not be a part of my life at all in a few months! I've been through it before and it's no fun, which is why I spent some time in denial both about my feelings, and about your worth. This is a huge loss for me. You are a warm, wonderful group of people and I have enjoyed my time with you. You're so funny, smart, creative, caring, compassionate and yes, you are, unique, and unusual. Know what you have! Other people see it too. As I write I'm feeling like one of those parents who only realizes on their death bed that they haven't told their kids that they're proud of them. I have never actually seen myself in a parental role in my congregations, that's just not me, but there you have it. And, I don't want to be one of those who croaks before she manages to grunt out a gruff: You made me proud kid. Not that I'm planning on croaking anytime soon, so well before then, and well before I ride off into the s unset I want to say it straight out: You make me proud. The internal focus is on articulating our faith and the external focus will be to utilize our annual Jazz event to make the larger community aware of who we are. I know that after receiving Maj-Britt?s email the other day, many of you are now asking, ?What happens next?? Your Board of trustees has arranged for a workshop on Saturday, April 5th given by Jane Dwinell, to help us to determine our optimum organizational structure and to determine the ministerial option that we would like for the next year. Who is Jane Dwiinell? A number of weeks back, 5 of your fellow congregants attended a workshop at Community Church in New York entitled ?Big Ideas for Small Congregations.? The workshop was given by Jane Dwinell who is co-author, along with Ellen Germann-Melosh, of a book of the same name. Those of us who attended were impressed and excited by what we heard. Additionally, much of the content of the last congregational workshop we did with the district was aligned with ideas presented in her book. I am excited that at the completion of this workshop we will not only have a single internal and external focus in line with our mission, but that we will also be on our way to putting in place the optimum supporting organizational structure. I encourage everyone to try to set the time aside to attend this workshop. We understand that some of you may only be able to attend either the morning or afternoon sessions, and that is fine. But, we ask that you please be on time for the sessions you are attending, as we will be working through a process and it can be very disruptive to have folks come in late to that process. Message-ID: <001c01c88ad3$4dc81570$6501a8c0@client001> Congregation, I had advertised in the WR that we would have a flower communion. Then I meditated on it and realized it's really way too early. It's not spring yet, none of us have flowers in our gardens... and so on. Let's do that later in the year. Yet I wanted a communion of some kind. So here's my thought: I would like to ask you, if you are coming to the service, to please take some time to explore the outdoors at some point in the next few days and find some small, repeat, small, object to bring in and set on the table at the front of the worship space. It can be anything, a leaf, a twig, a rock, and it doesn't have to be something "natural" it could be human made, just something "found", something that catches your attention. Let's look for signs of life, signs of spring. Or, signs of death if that is where you are drawn. Easter is about death and resurrection both. It's about new life but it's also about the hard times that come first. This is also an object that you will give up. As per the flower communion tradition we will leave with a different object than the one which we brought. Someone else's object will become yours. See you Sunday I hope! So I'll tell you now...but it doesn't mean we can't talk after the service on Sunday if you have questions. I've been called to be the minister of the Community Church of Chapel Hill, UU, in Chapel Hill North Carolina! They issued the "call" last Sunday. I will go to C3HUU as it is called April 25-May 4th for "candidating week". During those nine days I'll preach, meet the members, go to some special social events, have meetings, meet with area ministers and so on. After the sermon on May 4th the congregation will vote. That's when it's finally final. This is a long process we UU's engage in! I am excited, as is Michael. He went down with me for "pre-candidating" a few weeks ago and loved it. Pre-candidating was a long weekend during which I talked with the seven members of the search committee basically all weekend long, with a few breaks here and there. On Sunday I preached at a "neutral" pulpit. The congregation at C3HUU was not part of that weekend. The search committee also pre-candidated 3 other ministers, on other weekends, whom they had chosen from a slightly larger number with whom they had exchanged "packets". Packets are kind of like Curriculum Vitae in academia. Before that they had read through "ministerial records" which ministers submit online. Those are a combination of resume and essay. These search committees work hard, and I'm sure they're relieved, as am I, that it's almost over. Other ministers and I pre-candidated at several places and it all sifted itself out and I'm hearing from colleagues/friends now about where they have been called. It all seems to be working out as it should. I feel I have found the right "fit". North Carolina is not foreign territory to me. I lived in both Asheville and Chapel Hill from 75-84 (with a year out in the middle of that in Kenya). Like UUCP CH3UU had profound beginnings. The church has been around since 1953, when it was a non-denominational Community Church and became UU only in 1993. They were non-denominational because they claimed early on "the right to give a new interpretation to the nature of Christianity" and because they "didn't want the encumbrances of creed and dogma". Their first minister, Charles M. Jones, had long been active in social justice, as a Presbyterian minister, at a time in the south when it was very dangerous to do so. "His opposition to segregation began openly in 1943 when he organized and hosted the first ever racially integrated public meeting in Chapel Hill and he invited blacks to his church for meetings". (I quote from their packet). But he was too radical for the Presbyterians of the time, and was eventually de-frocked. Fifty people left the church with him, and along with others, including people of color, formed the Community Church and called Jones as minister. Their "heretical" activities continued. They started the first ever integrated pre-school in the south, in 1955. It continues today. In the seventies, when I lived in CH and was an organizer with War Resistors League and Women's Pentagon Action, and other groups, it was to the Community Church that I went for meetings. It looks different now. They've renovated, and added on, there are now about 370 adult members, and about 150 kids, and they are looking at how to form a brand new vision built on their proud past. Sound familiar? I'm thinking..."Yes we can!" (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjXyqcx-mYY...if you have not already) Coming back to New York eight years ago felt like a homecoming, because I grew up in the Bronx and some surrounding areas too. Living in this part of the country has allowed me to reclaim some pieces of my identity. Going back to Chapel Hill will be another kind of homecoming and another kind of re-claiming. It seems "meant to be". Blessings, Maj-Britt P.S. More happiness: About a week ago I learned that I won the "Skinner Sermon Award"! It does feel like spring is finally springing.
